WHAT IS AN IMPACTED TOOTH?
An impacted tooth is a blocked tooth that has not pushed through the gum. Patients frequently develop problems with impacted wisdom teeth (third molars), which can cause pain, discomfort and even lead to serious oral health issues.
WHAT IS EXPOSURE AND BONDING?
Usually all of your permanent teeth have erupted by the time you enter adolescence. However, some teeth may become stuck in the jaw. If this occurs, the teeth must be guided into the mouth; otherwise, the tooth could become permanently impacted.
IMPACTED TOOTH PROCEDURE
An impacted tooth can have a bracket attachment applied, enabling the tooth to be safely brought into occlusion. The tooth is exposed and the bracket is bonded just as normal
orthodontic brackets are bonded to the tooth. The bracket typically has a chain attached to it, which will be brought out of the gum tissue and tied to the adjacent orthodontic appliances. After healing, the patient returns for traction on the chain to guide the tooth into the mouth. Depending on the depth of impaction, the tooth is often erupting in just a few months. On rare occasions, the impacted tooth will be fused with the bone, rendering it totally immobile.
