WHAT IS ORAL PATHOLOGY?
Oral pathology is the study of diseases concerning the oral and maxillofacial region. One of the most serious oral diseases is oral cancer.
Unlike other parts of our body, the inside of our mouth is not readily visible. It is important to check your mouth for the following signs, which can indicate the beginning of an
oral disease or disorder:
● Reddish or whitish patches in the mouth
● A severe sore that does not heal
● A lump or thick on the skin on the lining of your mouth
● Chronic sore throat
● Hoarseness
● Difficulty swallowing and chewing
Look for these aberrations on your lips, cheeks, tongue, gums, palate, face and neck. You may
not experience pain; therefore, it is imperative you look for visual warning signs.
If an oral disease runs in your family, we encourage you to perform oral cancer self-examinations monthly. If you notice any abnormalities, do not hesitate to call our office.
